Storytelling Activities to Boost Communication

Boost your child’s communication skills with these creative activity ideas you can do at home! Modify according to the needs of your kids.

Storytelling Stones

Decorate stones/rocks with pictures or words. Take turns pulling one out and using it to spark a collaborative story that builds off each person’s contribution.

Story Sticks

Collect small sticks and draw different pictures/symbols on them like characters, objects, settings. Pull out a handful and challenge kids to weave them into an original tale.

Story Dice

Make your own “story dice” by writing story prompts like character names, plot ideas, locations on each side. Roll and use whatever comes up to jump-start telling a new story.

Story Walks

Go for a walk around your neighborhood or park. Have kids make up a story inspired by things you see along the way like animals, buildings, nature.

Storytelling Jar

Write story prompts on slips of paper and put in a jar. Take turns pulling one out and starting a story based on that prompt.

Campfire Stories

For a cozy evening activity, make a “campfire” with pillows and pretend to roast “marshmallows”. Take turns telling spooky, funny or imaginative stories.

Puppet Theater

Let kids put on a puppet show by making simple puppets from socks, paper bags or popsicle sticks. Encourage them to give the puppets personalities and act out a story.

Provide interesting prompts and props to inspire their imagination and self-expression. The possibilities are endless for engaging kids’ creativity through storytelling!
