This sentimental DIY uses your child’s actual handprint molded into dough as a precious keepsake. Family members can cherish this heartfelt gift for years! Getting kids involved make a gift extra special.

What You’ll Need:

  • Air-dry clay or salt dough (see recipe below)
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet or parchment paper
  • Drinking straw or pencil
  • Acrylic paints and paintbrushes
  • Clear acrylic sealer spray (optional)
  • Ribbon, string or twine

Homemade Salt Dough Recipe:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water

Instructions:

  • 1. Make your salt dough by mixing the flour and salt, then stirring in the water until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth and combined.
  • 2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 – 1/2 inch thickness. Transfer to a baking sheet or parchment paper.
  • 3. Have your child press their handprint firmly into the dough, making sure to press the fingers down.
  • 4. Use a drinking straw or pencil to poke a hole at the top for adding a ribbon hanger later.
  • 5. Allow the handprint to air dry completely, about 2-3 days, flipping halfway through.
  • 6. Once fully dried, have your child decorate the imprint using acrylic paints. Get creative with colors, designs or messages!
  • 7. Optional: Seal the finished handprint with a clear acrylic sealer spray to protect the paint when dry.
  • 8. Thread a ribbon, string or twine through the hole at the top to create a hanger.
